Beacon 10k Race Report 2009
The 'Angels Running Club' held their annual 10km road race last Sunday September 6th, starting from The Beacon Hotel, Haresfield. It was a county series race which attracted 130 runners. The men's race proved particularly exciting as the three lead runners were together until the 8 kilometre mark. At that stage Steve Millward from Gloucester Athletic club and Will Ferguson from CLC Striders pulled away from Paul Hocking of Stroud and District Athletic Club, showing their strength as they pushed on up the hill. It was only in the last 500 metres that Millward opened a gap beating Ferguson by just 2 seconds into second place. Good performances came from veteran runners Mike Smith first v40 from Bourton Roadrunners, Dennis Walmsley also from Bourton was first v45 finisher, Lee Christmas was the v50 prizewinner, Arther Daley was first v55 and Dave Spackman first v60 from Gloucester Athletic Club, Martin Ford from Cheltenham Harrier was first v65 and Art Williams from Almost Athletes was delighted to receive the prize for first v70. The men's teamwinners were Stroud AC with Gloucester AC a close second.
In the ladies' race Stephanie Lane from Bourton Road Runners was the first lady, more than 2 minutes ahead of second placed Nina Oates from CLC Striders. Lane was pleased with her time despite a headwind on part of the course and enjoyed a well-organised race. Liza Barry also from CLC Striders finished just 1 second behind her team mate to finish 3rd lady. Bourton Roadrunners was first ladies' team.
Six Members of the host club who provided marshalls took part in the race. Deborah Southgate was 1st 'Angel' and third in her veteran category. Second for the team was stalwart Helen Bown. Natasha Driver-Dickerson was next to finish for the club, closely followed by Dawn Hyde. Next Claire Waters new to the club ran a solid race and Eileen Dodwell completed the team.
